DURISOL REDUCES DISTURBANCE OF MOUSEHOLE VILLAGE SCHOOL HALL BUILD
Construction being built with Durisol materials

Eco-friendly construction supplier Durisol has helped to reduce the negative impact of an extension to Mousehole Primary School in Cornwall, by delivering construction materials onsite in smaller lorries and reducing noise pollution.

As a tiny fishing village on the Cornish coast, Mousehole’s streets are narrow and picturesque. In fact, it was this charming feature that became a real challenge for the design team. Using conventional brickwork would have required an internal steel frame to reinforce the school hall, but the huge steel lorries would have found it almost impossible to navigate Mousehole’s narrow streets. Of course, this type of activity would have caused significant disturbance for the village’s residents, for months on end. That’s when the design team decided to use Durisol’s unique interlocking wall form system.

“Because of the location, we had to try and eliminate anything that would be delivered on a large lorry!” explained Tony Haddy of Ward William Associates, quantity surveyor for the Mousehole school project. “Durisol uses a concrete infill and forms its own structural integrity, so it doesn’t require extra support. The concrete can be delivered on smaller lorries, which can access the site much more easily.”

Now the extension’s foundations are almost complete, the school and community will continue to benefit, as Durisol will actually save time and money onsite, cutting the cost of construction. Because Durisol’s interlocking blocks are stacked like Lego, the product is quicker to lay than traditional brick and block masonry construction, even for unskilled labour. That means you don’t need to have bricklaying skills to build with Durisol.

“It’s easy to use, easy to fix other things to, very user-friendly,” said Mr Haddy. “The blocks are lightweight so moving them around the site is quick and straightforward.”

The project contractor, Rok, was quick to praise Durisol’s sustainable qualities. The product is made from 80% recycled timber and the manufacturing process is eco-friendly throughout. “We’re always keen to focus on improving things environmentally,” said Elaine Yates of Rok. “We were very impressed by Durisol’s green credentials, and we’re really pleased to be using it for the entire extension.”

As the project progresses, contractor Rok is looking forward to more of the benefits of building with Durisol. “Durisol UK offer ongoing support and training, even when construction is underway,” said Ms Yates.

Durisol is already proving to be a great hit with everyone involved in this project. Very soon, the new school hall will be enjoyed by Mousehole’s children for years to come. To discuss your next project, call 0800 434 6458 or email enquiries@durisol.net.
