Kings Cross youth build a brighter future with Durisol
Finished Building

Green building material Durisol helped disadvantaged young people become actively involved in the building of the New Horizon Youth Centre in Kings Cross, which celebrated its grand re-opening last month. Because Durisol’s interlocking blocks are stacked like Lego, skilled bricklayers are not required, which made it easier for the centre’s users to help with the construction.

Open to 16-21 year olds, 7 days a week, the youth centre offers support and advice for homeless and underprivileged young people, providing practical information on jobs and accommodation as well as offering counselling and creative workshops. The centre was granted funding as part of the “My Place” scheme, which encourages adolescents to get involved in the design and construction of buildings that they will eventually use and benefit from.

“We really wanted the young people to be involved from start to finish, and they were,” said Shelagh O’Connor, director of the New Horizon Youth Centre. “In fact, one of our young men has now completed an apprenticeship and has been employed by the project contractor. We think this is great.”

As a green, cost-effective alternative to traditional brick and mortar, Durisol’s unique wall form system was used to construct the external walls of the new centre. The simplicity of Durisol makes it much quicker to lay than traditional bricks and mortar, reducing the cost of construction.

Although Architect Adam Khan was previously unfamiliar with Durisol, he was immediately impressed by the product’s credentials.

“The speed of build was excellent and the first floor was completed in just two days,” said Mr Khan. “And with Durisol you use less cement, so carbon dioxide emissions are reduced. I’d definitely use it again.”

Tales of the speedy, sustainable building material spread throughout the local area, with other contractors actually visiting the site to see the product in action. “We had a number of contractors coming to visit,” said Ms O’Connor. “They were really impressed with the speed and efficiency of the build and wanted to know what materials we were using.”

Now the refurbishment is complete, the young people involved in the design and development of the New Horizon Youth Centre can look forward to seeing great results from their hard work. As well as helping to create a focal point for the local community, they have made a significant contribution to environment and their own future.
