DURISOL GARDEN WINS A SILVER-GILT AWARD AT THE 2010 RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

Green construction material Durisol has been recognised by the judges at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, who have awarded a silver-gilt medal to the Kebony – Naturally Norway garden, in which Durisol was used to construct the boundary wall and retaining wall. The project was Norway’s first ever entry to the prestigious show, and aimed to create a unique, modern garden using only the finest quality sustainable materials.

Made from recycled timber, Durisol blocks offer a green alternative to traditional brick and block construction. The manufacturing process is eco-friendly throughout, and even rainwater from the factory roof is used in the creation of the blocks. Darren Saines, designer of Kebony – Naturally Norway, discovered Durisol UK at Ecobuild back in March, and was so impressed by the product that he immediately asked them to be a part of his latest venture.

“All our materials were carefully chosen to show that you can build a modern garden without compromising on quality,” said Mr Saines. “For this reason, Durisol was first choice.”

The Durisol UK team joined Mr Saines onsite to build and render the garden’s 22 metre long, 2 metre high boundary wall and 10 metre long, 3.5 metre high retaining wall, as well as the small walls under the garden pathways. With just a few weeks to install the garden, time was a key concern for Mr Saines, but because Durisol’s interlocking blocks are simply stacked together like Lego, the three-man team were able to assemble the two large walls in less than 24 hours.

Durisol’s walls were finished in a single coat of dark blue render to form a perfect backdrop for Kebony – Naturally Norway, which also included a bio ethanol fire, a pavilion made from Kebony wood and a glass living cube containing a hidden kitchen, daybed and shower. The garden was Darren Saines’ first RHS exhibition, and he is one of the few newcomers to receive an award at his very first show.

“Designing, building and showing the Kebony – Naturally Norway garden has been one of the highlights of my career,” said Mr Saines. “I am very happy with the result and will be back next year looking for gold!”
